Farewell...

I have been a fan of John Denver since early childhood, so with his passing, I feel I have lost a part of my younger days.

Even those who are not fans of his music cannot deny the effect he has had on our lives. Songs like "Rocky Mountain High" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" have woven themselves into the very fabric of American culture. When sales of his "Greatest Hits" album exceded ten million units, it was one of only three albums in the history of recorded music to do so.

Now in a time when it seems en vogue for entertainers to say they care about the environment, let us remember that John Denver was singing about protecting nature long before it was popular.

But John Denver didn't just sing about environmental issues,
he actually did something about them. He helped organize
and create the "Windstar Foundation" --which promotes education
and alternative energy sources--and "Plant-It 2000," which was responsible for planting over 100,000 trees in it's first year alone.

There are no words to describe the sadness I feel at this great loss, and yet his music is now even more meaningful to me than ever before.

Goodbye, John Denver. You will always have a place in my heart.

It has been over four years since I first wrote those words, yet it still seems like yesterday. Of course, the pain has eased, but John Denver's untimely death is still on my mind every day. When I watched the documentary about his life on VH-1, I was reminded what a complex and profound man he was. But in reality, the struggles he faced, the dreams he dreamed are no different than those of every man. John's uniqueness was in his creative ability. He had the gift to express those dreams and struggles we all have in common in a way that we could all understand. So, through the songs he sung, John Denver was in effect a spokesperson for the whole human race. The coldness of the grave has no power to silence that voice, and so long as we continue to listen and understand, his dream lives on.

He Walks in Quiet Solitude

Soaring high on wings of hope and destiny
Teaching us to try to touch the sky
He leaves behind a legacy of peace and love
While millions bow their heads and wonder why

"Now he walks in quiet solitude
The forests and the streams"
In a fairer land beyond the starry sky
Where crystal waters flow and air is fresh and clean
As "the Colorado Rocky Mountain High."

Words cannot express the pain we feel inside
Our loss is almost more than we can bear
But the songs he sang inspire us to carry on
With "our dreams and all the memories we share."

"Now he walks in quiet solitude
The forests and the streams"
In a fairer land beyond the starry sky
Where crystal waters flow and air is fresh and clean
As "the Colorado Rocky Mountain High."
